עופר אשכנזי מלמד בחוג להיסטוריה ומשמש כמנהל מרכז קבנר-מינרבה להיסטוריה גרמנית באוניברסיטה העברית. תחומי העניין שלו כוללים היסטוריה של גרמניה במאה העשרים, היסטוריה של יהודי גרמניה, תרבות ויזואלית והשפעות פוליטיות, אידיאולוגיות ותרבותיות מעבר לגבולות מדינות הלאום. ספרו הקודם נקרא Anti-Heimat Cinema: The Jewish Invention of the German Landscape (2020). בשנים האחרונות הוא עובד בעיקר על נושאים הקשורים בצילום כמקור היסטורי.
