Iris Shagrir holds a Ph.D. (2004) in medieval history from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She is associate professor of history in the department of History, Philosophy and Judaic studies at Open University of Israel, and a Life Member of Clare Hall, Cambridge University. Her research focuses on the central Middle Ages, specializing in crusade history, religious and cultural history of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, pilgrimage, liturgy in the Latin East and medieval anthroponymy. Her current research project on the role of liturgy and liturgical development in Frankish Jerusalem aims to investigate the culture of the Franks in the Levant within the context of the new state and the local settings.   She also studies the urban development of Jerusalem in the 12th century towards a reconstruction, chronologically and spatially, of Jerusalem as a religious and urban centre. Her publications include Naming Patterns in the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem (Oxford, 2003), The Crusades: History and Historiography (Hebrew, The Open University, 2014) and articles in Crusades, Revue Belge de Philologie et d'Histoire, Al-Masaq, The Journal of Medieval History and Medieval Prosopography. Her recent book is The Crusades: History and Historiography, (The Open University of Israel, Hebrew, 2014)
